Responding to the Food Shortage Crisis

A word from Dr. Steve Horn:

While the government is at a stalemate, what can we do to help those affected? Let’s do what Jesus told the disciples to do. Let’s look at what we have (think the five loaves and two fishes). Yes, we will understand quickly that it’s not enough. But might we also see that Jesus can take what we have and make it enough!

Just because the problem is overwhelming does not mean that we should not do what we can. Below is a list of what individuals and churches can do during this shutdown.

  1. Have a food drive
  2. Create food packages
  3. Collect gift cards
  4. Prepare hot meals for distribution
  5. Mobilize volunteers to serve at a local food bank
  6. Provide an information sheet highlighting local resources
  7. Mobilize chaplains to serve at distribution sites
  8. Set up a “Blessing Box”
  9. Coordinate with schools for weekend meal support
  10. Launch a meal match program

What if each of us adopted a person or a family? If 800,000 able persons in Louisiana adopted 1 person in need, we would solve this crisis overnight. Can you do that? If not, what can you do?
